Abstract

Contribution Analysis is a state-of-the-art methodology widely used for the evaluation of projects in international development cooperation. The training contents can be applied for evaluations of a wide range of international development projects and are not limited to Central Project Evaluations (CPE), which are commissioned by GIZ. Specific guidance on how Contribution Analysis should be applied in the context of the GIZ’s CPEs, however, is provided. It has to be kept in mind that the application of Contribution Analysis is considered a minimal methodological standard for the CPE and, thus, its professional handling should be among the key qualifications of the evaluators involved.

This advanced training course builds on the contents of the online certification course on the Atingi e-learning platform and offers training modules that serve to consolidate your knowledge on Contribution Analysis. Participation in this advanced training will not only allow you to deepen your theoretical understanding of Contribution Analysis but also to transfer knowledge into practical skills.

Learning objectives

After completion of the advanced course on Contribution Analysis

  • You have deepened your theoretical knowledge on selecting and formulating results hypotheses from the Theory of Change, rating the strengths of evidences by application of Evidence Analysis Tables, and writing the contribution story, considering alternative explanations and contextual factors.
  • You are enabled to transfer this theoretical knowledge into practice, by application of your knowledge to a pre-selected real-life case study, on which background materials will be provided.

You have discussed your lessons learnt with other participating evaluators and, thereby, mutually benefitted from the exchange of experiences.

The advanced course will also provide you with the opportunity to discuss specific questions regarding Contribution Analysis in GIZ Central Project Evaluations directly with representatives of the GIZ Corporate Unit Evaluation, who will be available for a dedicated consulting hour.

Contents

Advanced online training course on Contribution Analysis for projects in international development cooperation, building on the contents of the online certification course on the Atingi e-learning platform.

The advanced training course offers training modules that serve to consolidate and deepen knowledge in the following subject areas:

  • Selecting and formulating results hypotheses from the Theory of Change
  • Rating the strengths of evidence using Evidence Analysis Tables, and, thereby, critically assessing the project’s contribution claim
  • Writing the contribution story, under consideration of alternative explanations for changes observed and influencing contextual factors.

A case study of a CPE is used to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice.

In addition, due to its interactive approach, the advanced course serves as an exchange of experiences and networking between the participants.
